Despite being one of the UK's largest and most well-known grocery chains, Asda have had very little experience at service areas on major roads. This is rapidly changing, with Asda taking over the vast majority of EG Group's facilities in November 2023, including their forecourts, the entire Leon brand, and many food courts.
The newly-acquired sites are branded Asda Express, a name that is also applied to service areas taken over from Co-op. Asda often owns the entire service area complex that the Asda Express store is tied to, turning them into one of the UK's biggest A-road service area operators. They even own old EG Group food courts where, as there is no shop, the Asda name isn't displayed prominently at all. The actual make-up of each site can be quite complicated.
Roadside History
Ahead of EG Group's initial purchase of Asda, they announced plans to open Asda On the Move mini-markets in their forecourts and service areas in 2020. This started with a trial in the forecourt shop at Ashby de la Zouch in October.
After the takeover, EG Group's 'Asda On the Move' name became their main shopping brand, replacing SPAR and Sainsbury's On the Go. Initially, some stores opened under an 'Extra Special' format with an extended premium product range. Some stores included new Leon Coffee machines, as well as EG Group's usual foodservice partners, including Subway and Greggs.
The two companies' relationship changed direction in 2023, with Asda taking over EG Group's forecourts and using the 'Asda Express' name. A few sites were retained by EG Group for their 'EG On the Move' brand.
