Trivia and History
Official signs on the A59 Clitheroe Bypass point to a filling station and restaurant, but additional facilities have been added later as the Ribble Valley Enterprise Park has expanded around them.
Most of those additional facilities were developed and continue to be operated by EG Group in the early 2010s, but these do not form part of the official signposted facilities.
As a result of the way the business parks have grown, the service area has no vehicle connection to Barrow, even though the village is just a short walk away.
Planning and Opening
Ribble Valley Enterprise Park was developed on the edge of Barrow village in the 1990s, with plans for a service area on the new access road from the A59 being proposed in 2001.
McDonald's initially proposed to build a drive-thru restaurant here, with that restaurant opening in around 2004. Following the opening, Margram then set about adding a filling station behind the McDonald's restaurant, with a Somerfield filling station opening in 2006. Margram referred to the site as Clitheroe service station.
Recent Developments
Following the acquisition of Somerfield by The Co-operative Group in 2009, the forecourt rebranded to Co-op Food. In 2011, Co-op Group partnered with Texaco, which saw the site change to their brand, retaining the Co-op Food store. The site later rebranded back to Co-op Petrol in late 2016. Co-op referred to the site as Barrow service station, and this has now stuck.
Following Asda's acquisition of the Co-op Petrol estate in August 2023, the filling station was rebranded to Asda Express on 10 November 2023.
Barrow Park
Since the service area opened, the land next to it had been up for sale as part of the 'Barrow Brook' development. EG Group acquired land directly next to the existing facilities in 2016, adding Greggs, KFC Drive Thru, Subway and Starbucks Drive Thru stores here in 2017.
Whilst these facilities aren't strictly part of the official signposted service area, they are accessed as easily as the main site and act as competitors.
