Despite being one of the UK's largest and most well-known grocery chains, Asda have had very little experience at service areas on major roads. This is rapidly changing, with Asda taking over the vast majority of EG Group's facilities in November 2023, including their forecourts, the entire Leon brand, and many food franchises.
The newly-acquired sites are being branded Asda Express, a brand that is already being applied to service areas taken over from Co-op.
Roadside History
Ahead of EG Group's initial purchase of Asda, they announced plans to open Asda On the Move mini-markets in their forecourts and service areas in 2020. This started with a trial in the forecourt shop at Ashby de la Zouch in October.
After the takeover, EG Group's 'Asda On the Move' name became their main shopping brand, replacing SPAR and Sainsbury's On the Go. Initially, some stores opened under an 'Extra Special' format with an extended premium product range. Some stores included new Leon Coffee machines, as well as EG Group's usual foodservice partners, including Subway and Greggs.
The two companies' relationship changed direction in 2023, with Asda taking over EG Group's forecourts and using the 'Asda Express' name. A few sites retained by EG Group are likely to keep the '...On the Move' theme and become 'EG On the Move'.
