Between 1993 and 2008, Clacket Lane westbound was thought to be the largest service area in the country. It also described itself as the "brightest".

Figures from Roadchef suggest Clacket Lane has by far the largest parking areas of any Roadchef site, with parking for more than 700 cars overall.

Being close to London and the Channel Ports, it has also at times stood out for its higher prices as it takes advantage of the passing trade. This has made it a target for vandals on occasion.

There have been problems with HGVs parking on the hard shoulder before accessing the facilities. As a result, multilingual 'no parking' signs have been placed on each exit from the service area.

The service area sits right next to the Kent-Surrey border, causing confusion as the nearest postal town (Westerham) is in Kent, but the service area isn't. It's also positioned close to the Meridian line, which crosses the M25 about two miles west of here. No other motorway service area has that distinction, but the mammoth A-road site at Cambridge does manage to be much closer to it.

Actually building the service station here proved controversial, as its history shows.

LEON restaurants were added to both sides in March 2020 but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, didn't begin trading until July 2020. The westbound restaurant uses space formerly occupied by Pret A Manger, in what was a failed trial.
