Work on the service area started in March 2000, with the service area fully opening on 22 January 2001. It was referred to in planning as 'Radwell services'.
The motorway network's first Regus Express Workpod opened here on 23 May 2014, but it has since been removed. The upper level of the building is now used as the head office of Grice Collins Long, who provide administrative services on behalf of Extra.
The hotel opened as a Sleep Inn, and includes a drop-off area at the front as if it was expecting a higher class of customer than the usual motorway lodge. The petrol station was originally operated by Texaco and Somerfield.
Deep Blue Fish and Chips opened a restaurant here on 16 November 2021, offering a breakfast menu in the morning and their standard fish and chip affair in the afternoons and evenings in a similar concept to Welcome Break's The Good Breakfast/Harry Ramsden's set-up.
Extra currently hold planning permission to build a drive-thru coffee shop here. This will be a Welcome Break-operated Starbucks and is expected to be built in 2023.
