Pavilion was a brand of motorway service areas who bought their sites from Rank in December 1991.
It was created by Michael Guthrie, who had past experience running Trowell services, and more recently, buying brands from the struggling Rank Group. He says he approached Rank to suggest he buy the division; they agreed a price of £86million (around £194million in 2025).
The new chain was initially called Brightreasons II, as it had a different funding model to Guthrie's previous Rank buy-outs. It legally became Pavilion Group in spring 1992.
Pavilion called themselves "Britain's newest and most innovative name on the motorways", saying that they wanted to create a "holiday atmosphere". They had bright green branding inside, and areas called 'STORE', 'Carousel', 'Snack Cafe', 'Pavilion Restaurant' and a generic 'Truck Driver's Restaurant'. Their motorway lodges were branded 'Pavilion Lodge'. Inside, they used globe lights and vintage windows to make a small-town atmosphere, offset by resort-like stripy awning. Outside, they had route maps and advised of the distance to the next Pavilion site.
Curiously, of the 11 service areas they owned, five had their names changed. Some were changed by Pavilion, and others by their successor. They had inherited Rank's two 'One Stop'-branded sites, which they sold.
Investment
Commenting on the deregulation of service station planning in 1992, Pavilion wrote off the idea of a sudden wave of new service areas, saying "no one is going to take that sort of investment decision lightly". They were rumoured to be interested in purchasing Strensham, but in fact they didn't open any sites other than their initial launch set.
As part of their opening publicity, an event was held at Hilton Park where part of the car park was turned into a beach, with ice cream, deckchairs and donkeys. In a separate event, massages were offered to drivers, and the media were invited to sample the new restaurant. In total, £20million was spent on refurbishment (around £43million), turning around what they called a "distinctly tired estate". Large signs promoted the name of each service area next to the Pavilion symbol, with restaurants using site branding like "Forton Restaurant", often written on a neon sign.
Pavilion spoke highly of HGV drivers, and continued to invest in dedicated facilities for them, even after other service areas had stopped doing this.
Michael Guthrie purchased his former brand Pizzaland, allowing him to introduce Pizzaland to Pavilion service areas, alongside Burger King, making Pavilion one of the first operators to embrace High Street branding. Tie Rack stores were also available.
Guthrie described his vision of Pavilion as being a "continental-style eating emporia", similar to shopping malls. He said he was passionate about turning struggling businesses around and wanted Pavilion to be a brand people came to trust, by moving away from "the motorway image". During their short run, Pavilion made a number of PR stunts, including adding a fake beach and planning to introduce facilities for wedding ceremonies.
Demise

By 1994, it became clear that Pavilion's investors wanted the business to be sold, in order to recoup the refurbishment costs and avoid being squeezed out by their larger rivals. Pavilion were soon approaching potential buyers.
All of Pavilion's service areas were bought by Granada for £125million (around £252million in 2025) in April 1995. A rebranding exercise lasted until June 1996. Granada said that they could increase each site's profitability by utilising economies of scale. As part of the takeover, Granada agreed to sell their Magor and Pavilion's Bolton West and Severn View.
The move, for the first time, knocked Welcome Break to second position as the UK's largest operator. They said that they had considered buying Pavilion but backed off because they didn't want to be investigated by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Only a few months later, Granada bought Welcome Break and consequently featured in a lengthy investigation by the Commission, who told Granada to sell off many sites.
Pavilion also inherited two smaller service areas on the A1 and A55 which were scaled down and sold off to Trusthouse Forte.
After leaving Pavilion in 1994, Michael Guthrie would go on to become a director at Welcome Break and at the MSA Operators Committee.
