Trivia and Design

Leigh Delamere lends its name to Michael's former protégé in the 2020 American miniseries Your Honor. It was also the name of a character in Jasper Fforde's 2001 novel The Eyre Affair, where Mr Delamere demands that a motorway service area be named after his mother, Leigh.
On TV, Leigh Delamere was a chosen stop-off during a 2009 episode of Gavin & Stacey, a show which spoke a lot about the M4's service areas, but on this occasion the scene was actually filmed at Cardiff Gate. In print, melancholic columnist Adrian Chiles called the place "post-apocalyptic", after he stopped at the westbound service area late at night in 2024.
A study by Moto in 2023 found that the westbound service area's HGV parking was nearly full, but the eastbound side was only half-full: an unusual imbalance.
Moto were granted planning permission to build a Costa Drive Thru on both sides in November 2019. Several locations have been suggested on both sides for the position of the drive-thru units, with Moto deciding that the eastbound unit will be positioned at the back of the car park whilst the westbound unit will utilise the former police building at the back of the car park. They are also seeking to build a solar farm on land next to the service area in 2025.
Moto opened an electric vehicle charging hub on the westbound side in late 2022. Leigh Delamere was also selected as the next candidate for Moto's competitive fuel pricing project, with changes made to the approach signs in February 2023.
The westbound Burger King drive thru lane reopened on 20 March 2023, almost 20 years since it last operated. A new Pret A Manger unit also opened on the eastbound side on the same day, with a new KFC restaurant opening on the westbound side on 25 April 2023. The westbound Cotton Traders store then later closed in June 2024, with a new Pret A Manger store taking its place on 8 August 2024.
