Membury is built on the site of the old RAF Membury airfield. There is a tribute to those who served there in World War II in the car park.

The service area can be identified from afar by the large transmitting signal situated next to it.

As with most Welcome Break service areas, David Fisher was commissioned to paint some artwork. At Membury the mural was dedicated to Newbury Races, and was available to buy. The original is now positioned above the eastbound escalator.
