The service area was first proposed in 1989 by Citygrove Roadside. It was soon taken forward by Extra, and had to compete with numerous proposals for new service areas along the new motorway.

The upgraded A1(M) opened in 1998, with no service areas. Peterborough services opened on 15 January 2001, the second of a trio of new service areas they opened. Facilities included a McColl's newsagent, Entrempts and Malongo Café, with a petrol station operated by Texaco and Somerfield. The hotel, a Sleep Inn, had a covered drop off zone - an unusual feature on the motorways.

Extra hold planning permission to build a drive-thru coffee shop here. This will be a Moto-operated Costa and is expected to be built in 2024, becoming one of the first Costa Drive Thru stores at an Extra site.

Changes

The forecourt was sold to Shell in 2008.

An Ed's Easy Diner and Wafflemeister kiosk were both trialled here, alongside Cambridge, but these were both removed during 2019. They were replaced by Sweet Barrels and BomDia respectively. BomDia and Sweet Barrels both later closed in 2020, falling victim to the pandemic.

SSP's Patisserie Valerie closed in January 2019, after the chain fell into administration. SSP opened a Warrens Baker in its place in February 2020, occupying the former Patisserie Valerie unit, but this closed in February 2023 owing to poor trade.

The service area spilled into the neighbouring field, with a large new coach and HGV parking area opening on 7 February 2022, adding an additional 60 HGV spaces, with space for more. The original, much tighter and isolated, lorry park became overflow parking. The works also involved extending the building to add more toilets, a new Changing Places facility and a new multi faith room, as well as building a new rear entrance for the new parking areas. The new entrance meant the delivery yard had to be divided into two, with very different access arrangements. The existing picnic area and children's play area were moved next to the amenity building, away from the charging points.

PizzaLuxe opened here on 11 November 2021, utilising the former Ed's Easy Diner unit. As well as serving breakfast, it also offered a made-to-order cocktail menu and full-service bar. This was the first of its kind on the motorway, with PizzaLuxe claiming they wanted to turn the service area into "a destination". An official opening event was held on 19 November 2021, allowing customers to sample the new menu. After months of staffing issues, the restaurant suddenly closed in November 2023, with all signage and furniture removed.

IONITY are planning to add 24 high-powered charging points to the service area.
