The service area was first proposed in 1989 by Citygrove Roadside. It was soon taken forward by Extra, and had to compete with numerous proposals for new service areas along the new motorway.

The upgraded A1(M) opened in 1998, with no service areas. Peterborough services opened on 15 January 2001. Facilities included a McColl's newsagent, Entrempts and Malongo Café, with a petrol station operated by Texaco and Somerfield - that petrol station was sold to Shell in 2008.

An Ed's Easy Diner and Wafflemeister kiosk were both trialled here alongside Extra's site at Cambridge however these were both removed during 2019. They were replaced by Sweet Barrels and BomDia respectively.

A Warren's Bakery unit operated by SSP opened here in February 2020 occupying the former Patisserie Valerie unit.
