Trivia and Design

The Grill & Griddle restaurant in 1960.

Newport Pagnell is charged with being the UK's oldest service area. The truth is slightly more complicated than that, but Newport Pagnell was certainly the first motorway restaurant, and it was tailored mainly towards the needs of wealthy families. Full details are provided on the history page.

When the M1 was built, this was the edge of a small village. Houses were soon built nearby, and the urban area has now surrounded the service area on all sides. The service area has itself expanded far beyond its original boundaries.

The café featured in a lengthy scene in the 1968 film 'Charlie Bubbles'. The 1987 Smiths song, 'Is It Really So Strange?', then referenced the service area with its melancholic line, "I lost my bag at Newport Pagnell".

The first motorway WHSmith store was trialled here before being rolled out to almost every service station in the country.

New Applegreen Electric chargers were also added to both car parks in December 2023. A Starbucks drive thru pod opened on the northbound side on 12 March 2024.
