Trivia and Design
See also: History:Northampton
Northampton was originally built as 'Rothersthorpe services'. It was waiting 20 years before it was built, and before too long it was demolished and built again. Full history.
The new buildings were a pair of identical airport hangar-style glass boxes with all their facilities along the back, and the layout remained a perfect rectangle until 2015, when the northbound building was extended to direct customers past a new SPAR shop. This was a trial store, which Roadchef later rolled out nationwide.
Both sides gained Changing Places facilities in winter 2022. These were followed by WHSmith store refits, with the northbound side reopening in November 2022 with new ranges and a new layout alongside new food to go offers, and the southbound store receiving the same in February 2023.
A McDonald's drive-thru lane was then added next to the southbound amenity building in Spring 2023, with the lane officially opened by Roadchef CEO Mark Fox and The Services King on 22 June 2023. The car and coach parks were both reconfigured as a result.
Western Power Distribution increased the electricity capacity at Northampton in 2023, allowing the southbound side to gain six additional high-powered charging bays in December 2023. Works will commence in January 2025 on adding a further six bays to the southbound side, in what Roadchef describes as 'phase two' of a four-phase EV charging hub project here. The southbound side will eventually become home to 24 high-powered chargers in what will be one of the largest EV hubs for Roadchef.
Both Fresh Food Café units gained Coco Di Mama offerings on 18 December 2023, as part of Roadchef's continued expansion of the brand.
