Trivia and History

Aerial view of the fields.
The green fields just before the service area was built.

Plans for a service area at this busy junction were first submitted in 1991 by Fairhurst Land Developers. The first drawings showed the entry roundabout further east than it is now, with a lodge in the south-west corner, a shop and restaurant in the north-west corner and a picnic area in the north-east corner. The car park was in the middle with lorry parking at the north end, and the petrol station is roughly in the same place it is today. The 'missing' A19 southbound slip road was provided as part of the project.

A second set of plans were submitted by Saxon Petroleum in 1995 which saw their service area set out in roughly the layout we see today. It proposed a BP filling station, McDonald's Drive Thru restaurant, OK Diner restaurant, Fatty Arbuckles restaurant, a Greene King pub with a Wacky Warehouse children's play area, a Holiday Inn Express hotel and a picnic area with a lake.

The proposal was picked up by Roadside Group Ltd, who secured planning permission in 1997. The final plan was scaled down from the original and featured the filling station, drive-thru restaurant, hotel and family restaurant alongside the picnic area and lake.

The site opened in 1998 with a BP filling station, a McDonald's Drive Thru restaurant, a Holiday Inn Express hotel and an Innkeepers Fayre pub-restaurant known as the 'Wynyard Park Inn'. This included the Wacky Warehouse children's play area.

Additions and Expansion

Granada were the first to propose additional facilities here and opened the Billingham branch of Little ChefHistory in the centre of the site in 2000, next to a small garden. This was one of the last Little Chefs to open. It was short-lived and closed in 2005, being left empty for a few months with Little Chef still paying the rent. The building was demolished in 2006 and replaced by a KFC Drive Thru, with the garden becoming car parking.

The Wynyard Park Inn was rebranded in 2005 to become the 'Wolviston' branch of Toby Carvery. The hotel received a 29-bed extension in 2007, and it was sold to Premier Inn the following year.

The filling station went onto become a Shell site. This later changed back to BP in late 2012, with a Nisa Local store.

A Costa Drive Thru was built on one of the only remaining plots of land in 2016, next to the A19 slip road. The hotel and restaurant received another extension in the same year.

A Domino's Pizza store was added next to the entrance road in December 2018 - an unusual feature for a service area. Two InstaVolt electric vehicle charging points were added to the car park in 2020.

MFG acquired the filling station in late 2017 and re-branded the shop to Londis. During early 2022, they refurbished the sales building adding updated the Londis branding. The Subway franchise was swapped for Greggs, opening on 10 February 2022. They installed one of their 'MFG EV Power' electric vehicle charging hubs at the same time, with eight charging bays going live in November 2023.
