Trivia and History
The service area is nestled in the loop of the junction of the A1 and the B6326, within the Balderton Interchange complex.
Historically there was another Newark services, the building a few miles up the A1 at the Winthorpe Interchange, but that scaled back within a few years. As well as catering for long-distance traffic, the new Newark is also be aiming to attract local traffic from the new Fernwood Business Park opposite and the Newark Southern Link Road.
Welcome Break and Alliance GW Ltd first entered discussions with Newark & Sherwood District Council in 2019. Welcome Break, under new owners, were seeking to expand fast with a renewed focus on A-roads. Planning permission was first granted in November 2020, and the site was substantially finished by October 2022, but it couldn't open until issues with the junction had been resolved. It eventually opened on 1 March 2023, with a launch event taking place on 4 March, attended by the Town Mayor of Newark.
National Highways had agreed to place official road signs on both sides of the A1, calling it 'Newark services', in August 2022. Temporary signs were eventually installed in October 2023, until which many people hadn't known that the facility was there. It seems internal bureaucracy caused the delay.
Layout
Despite its small footprint, there are 67 car parking spaces, 42 HGV parking spaces, an abnormal load parking area, 2 dedicated coach bays and 12 electric vehicle charging points. This may not be enough, as before it even opened, Welcome Break limited the coach parking to 45 minutes, citing high demand.
This was the first service area to be fully developed since Welcome Break were taken over by Applegreen. As a result, it featured some unusual brand partners. Like many Applegreen buildings, the units are along the back wall, as well as access to the toilets and showers. The forecourt shop is at the front of the same building, but is a trial branding of Budgens.
A second building is the usual Welcome Break drive-thru Starbucks. The two buildings are separated from the main parking areas by a mysterious dividing line, where an oil pipe runs under the complex.
