As a forecourt operator, Elf came to particular prominence on major roads in Britain in the early 1990s, during which time developing forecourts was highly competitive. They operated two motorway forecourts, and had their fuel sold at others.
Elf merged with TotalFina in 2000, and by 2003 all sites had either become part of the Total brand, or been sold to another operator. Many of those which were sold became Gulf branded.
