The design of the building is odd in offering several entrances depending on the facility desired, including what used to be a full supermarket unit.

As befits its unusual history, this is one of the strangest motorway service area buildings to walk around.
 
The main building feels like two completely separate buildings which happen to be inter-connected. On the far end is a single-storey [[McDonald's]] restaurant with large windows and its own entrance, and from here you can walk into a corridor past some café units, ending at a supermarket. This end of the building has a three-storey hotel stretching across it, with the 'official' building entrance in the middle. A third entrance, at the very end, used to offer direct entry into the supermarket.


Although inter-connected, the McDonald's unit is built completely differently, and unlike the rest of the building it doesn't have the hotel sitting above it.

A document dated 1991 says that there would be a new service area at "Blackburn S". The motorway itself didn't open until 1997, so very little work on a possible service area was done at this point, beyond acknowledging that a new service area would be needed.
