Trivia and History
The Willowtree garage is named after the Willowtree Cottages, which it was built next to on a piece of land primed for development when the Alnwick Bypass was built. The petrol station used to be branded BP, then Shell, then Total, then went unbranded for a while (retaining the Total colour scheme for some time after) and most recently became a Co-op Petrol site. In 2020, Rontec purchased the Willowtree forecourt from the Co-operative Group which became Rontec’s second site at the same junction.
The forecourt was originally owned by Aln Motor Co Ltd, and then Ord's Of Amble. In the 1970s there was a plan to build a hotel here.
A second site was developed on a larger plot of land to the south of the junction. The southern forecourt used to be branded Shop 'n Drive.
Many sources refer to this site as "Alnwick motorway service area", despite the A1 not being a motorway.
