Trivia and History

The canal lock situated in the centre of the roundabout outside the service area, previously located on the nearby Grand Union Canal.

The roundabout outside the service area features a former canal lock from the nearby Grand Union Canal. This was installed in 2009 and is a nod to the nearby Foxton Locks, Britain's largest canal lock staircase.

Planning and Opening

A new bypass to the east of the Market Harborough was approved in the 1980s. Interest soon turned to adding a service area along the new section of bypass with two sites chosen: this site at the northern end and at the Great Bowden roundabout in the middle.

Plans for a service area at this site first emerged in 1988, with space for a filling station, restaurant and lodge. Local firm Ellwoods Garage Limited also submitted plans, which were permitted on appeal in 1995.

Meanwhile, at the Great Bowden roundabout, Forte wanted to build a filling station, Little Chef restaurant and hotel. Another proposal was made in 1990 by Turnkey Developments for a filling station too.

The northern site eventually opened in late 1999 with a Texaco filling station. A McDonald's Drive Thru was added next to the forecourt in 2001 and Whitbread added a Brewers Fayre pub-restaurant and Premier Inn hotel in 2005. The Brewers Fayre was rebranded to another of Whitbread's brands, Table Table, in 2008.

Recent Developments

The forecourt rebranded to a Jet filling station in the early 2010s. BP purchased the forecourt in early 2016 and redeveloped the site, reopening in August 2016 with a new canopy, pumps and sales building including an M&S Simply Food store and Wild Bean Café.

Three BP Pulse electric vehicle charging points were added to the forecourt in 2021. Two InstaVolt chargers were then added to the McDonald's car park in early 2024.
