Trivia and History
The service station is named after the adjacent village of Cromwell, but some documents call it 'Oliver Cromwell service station'. Whoever it claims to be named after, it's not connected to the former Cromwell Café, which was positioned about a mile further north.
A Little ChefHistory and Esso forecourt opened here in the late 1960s, as a brother to North Muskham services. The Little Chef closed in 2008 and became Café Amore, which itself closed in 2015 and is now an empty building up for sale.
The filling station was purchased by The Carsley Group in 2007. They redeveloped the site with a new sales building, forecourt and canopy. They had planned to rebrand the site to a BP Connect store, but instead it opened with a Londis store and coffee lounge. In 2015, The Carsley Group planned to redevelop the site again to introduce a new, larger sales building by demolishing the former Little Chef building and adding new parking areas. These plans were withdrawn after the site was sold to Applegreen.
With A Motorway Operator
Applegreen purchased a significant stake of Welcome Break in November 2018. One of the trade-offs of the purchase was that Cromwell would eventually be re-branded Welcome Break, and adjusted to reflect the rest of their estate. It officially became part of Welcome Break in summer 2020, though no external changes were made. A Greggs store was then added in December 2020.
The site was officially de-branded from BP on 1 April 2023 and later rebranded to the Welcome Break brand in late 2023, regaining a Londis store in the process. Welcome Break have called the abandoned restaurant building "a redundant eyesore incapable of being refurbished", citing its poor state of structure and fabric. They are seeking to replace it with a KFC drive thru; a small building with a tiny dining area. This would involve building a new car park with eight electric vehicle charging points.
