Trivia and History

The forecourt branded BP and SPAR in 2009.

A pair of petrol stations, one on either side of the road, date back to the early 1960s: northbound was known as Belbroughton service station, and southbound as Bell End service station. The southbound filling station opened in around 1963 and was branded 'National' throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Plans for a restaurant to join each filling station came in the 1980s, first from Trusthouse Forte, who submitted plans in 1982 to build a Little Chef next to the southbound filling station however this plan was refused. Instead, a northbound Happy Eater was built in 1986, demolishing the former northbound filling station in the process which had been abandoned a few years previous. A children's play area added outside upon opening.

The Happy Eater was converted in 1996 to become the Belbroughton branch of Little Chef. This later closed in 2001 when it was converted to offices and became home to Barberry.

The southbound filling station was branded Fina in the 1980s, rebranding to Gulf in the early 1990s, to Shell in 1998 and to BP in the early 2000s. The site gained a SPAR store in 2009. The filling station then changed back to Shell in around 2014.

The site was later acquired by MFG, who converted the SPAR store to Londis. They hold planning permission to extend the sales building to introduce a Greggs store to the site, which was originally planned as a Subway, and to install one of their 'MFG EV Power' forecourts which will include eight electric vehicle charging bays.

Works commenced on the sales building extension in May 2024, with the new Greggs store opening on 11 July 2024. Plans for the EV charging hub have been dropped in favour of car parking bays for the new Greggs store, along with two new jet wash bays to replace the car wash.
