Trivia and History

A short distance south of here is the notorious Black Cat Roundabout, which has its own unsigned service area on the opposite side of the road.
The site opened in the late 1980s with a Mobil filling station and AJ's family restaurant, both operated by M Kamper Services.
AJ's sold the restaurant to McDonald's in 1995, apparently because of the proposal to replace more of the A1 with a motorway, which meant that the restaurant would need a wealthy owner to fight for it to included in the plan. McDonald's demolished the building and replaced it with a new-build drive-thru the following year.
The forecourt was sold to Q8 in late 1990 before the site was acquired by BP in the late 1990s. The filling station was later acquired by The Carsley Group, who rebuilt the forecourt in 2013 with the new zig-zag roof replacing a long, thin one and adding a Londis store and Subway concession.
The Carsley Group sold the forecourt to Applegreen in 2018, with the shop rebranding to the Applegreen brand. In November 2018, Applegreen purchased a significant stake of Welcome Break. One of the trade-offs of the purchase was that Wyboston would eventually be re-branded Welcome Break, and adjusted to reflect the rest of their estate.
Welcome Break officially took control during the summer of 2021 and refitted the shop, rearranging the layout inside. The Subway store then closed in December 2021 and was replaced by a new Greggs store, which opened on 11 February 2022. The site was officially de-branded from bp on 1 April 2023 and was rebranded to the Welcome Break brand during summer 2023.
