Trivia and History
The layout of the Bobbing Junction on the Iwade Bypass left space in the corner, on the site of Bobbing Court Cottages on what was Bobbing Court Farm, which would soon be used by a service area.
Planning and Opening
Outline planning permission for a service area was granted to BP in 1992, while the bypass was still under construction. Margram picked up the plan in 1996.
The first facility, a McDonald's drive-thru restaurant, opened here in November 1999 and Whitbread later provided the Bobbing Apple branch of Brewers Fayre as well as a 40-bed Travel Inn hotel in January 2000. It wasn't until later in 2000 when Margram provided the forecourt under their Petromar name as a Somerfield branded site, with BP providing the fuel.
Recent Developments
The pub-restaurant rebranded to Brewsters shortly after opening, reverting back to Brewers Fayre in 2005. The hotel also gained a 22-bed extension in its own detached building in 2007, rebranding to Premier Inn in the same year.
The pub-restaurant had been planned to become one of Whitbread's Taybarn's all-you-can-eat restaurants in 2009, but this didn't happen.
Following the acquisition of Somerfield by The Co-operative Group in 2009, the site rebranded to Co-op Food. In 2011, Co-op Group partnered with Texaco, which saw the site change to their brand, retaining the Co-op Food store. The site later rebranded back to Co-op Petrol in late 2016.
An InstaVolt electric vehicle charging points was installed in the McDonald's car park in March 2022.
Following Asda's acquisition of the Co-op Petrol estate in August 2023, the filling station was rebranded to Asda Express on 3 November 2023.
