The Top Rank Motor Lodge (soon shortened to Rank Motor Lodge) was Rank's brand of roadside budget hotel, added to their motorway service areas in the late 1980s. They usually used old picnic areas, or other redundant sections of car parks. It followed the same business model used by better-known names like Granada Lodge and the second incarnation of Travelodge. The Motor Lodge also appeared at Rank's short-lived 'One Stop' brand of A-road service areas.
Signs in the service area encouraged customers to ask staff if they could stay. Exact prices varied by location, but by 1990, one single room cost £16 per night (now worth around £39). Its logo showed trees planted above the brand name.
When Pavilion took over, a simple name change saw it become Pavilion Lodge.
