Trivia and Design
See also: History:Peartree
Peartree has been passed between several operators, as detailed in its history. Welcome Break took over in July 2010, but they do not run the hotels.
The building takes an unusual design where the toilets appear to be in the basement, while the rest of the public facilities are on the ground floor. In fact, the building is raised above the ground, and the main entrance is positioned at the top of a ramp.
Until recently, the services were advertised as being open from 11am until "late" - this has recently changed as Starbucks opens at 6am, Waitrose opens at 8am and KFC is open from 11am. These units are generally closed by 11pm, though due to its suburban location, the KFC has been known to stay open as late as 1am - a rarity for a service station branch.
Welcome Break did consider leaving the Starbucks open 24 hours, in common with their motorway sites, but this didn't happen. During Christmas periods and the COVID-19 pandemic, Peartree often had the fewest facilities open, reflecting its lower custom levels and inferior status as an A-road service area.
As it is not a motorway site, Welcome Break were allowed to open a Greggs store here in December 2022, reducing the size of the Waitrose store to make space for it.
As the site is close to the centre of Oxford, it has encountered numerous problems with tourist coaches filling up the coach park.
