Northampton was originally built as 'Rothersthorpe services'. It was waiting 20 years before it was built, and before too long it was demolished and built again. The new buildings were a pair of identical airport hangar-style glass boxes with all their facilities along the back, although in recent years extensions have changed the frontage. Full history.
The southbound Costa Drive Thru opened on 25 August 2017. A northbound one joined it almost two years later in June 2019.
A LEON was added to the northbound building in July 2019 in an additional extension to the front of the building.
The northbound WHSmith store was refurbished in November 2022 and now includes a new Calippo Blast machine alongside new ranges and a new layout. The southbound store later followed, reopening on 14 February 2023.
Western Power Distribution is planning to increase the electricity capacity at Northampton, to allow it to potentially become a charging hub in the future.
