Trivia and History
The filling station was built on a small parcel of land left over when the road was built. It opened in around 1984.
A Little Chef was added in 1985. This was one of a pair (the other being at Acre Hill) that would replace the original branch that was further to the west. One of these was celebrated as being their 250th branch. This closed in around 2005, becoming Rumblin' Tums Café, which closed in 2010. It then became the motorcycle accessories shop, with a snack bar often sitting in the car park.
Meanwhile, a developer applied to build new service area at the nearby Lower Road roundabout.
The filling station was owned by Malthurst and branded Total. It was acquired by MRH in around 2012, who rebranded it to BP. They added their own-brand Hursts store to the site in 2018.
Following the merger of MRH and MFG, this became an MFG site in late 2018. They rebranded the store to Londis in 2020.
MFG are now seeking to completely demolish their forecourt, to provide new facilities in its place. This will include four electric vehicle charging points, four parking spaces and a new sales shop with a Greggs store inside it.
