Trivia and History

The filling station was built on a small parcel of land left over when the road was built. It opened in around 1984 and was branded Jet, known as 'Westies Garage'.

The original Eynsham branch of Little Chef was positioned a little to the west of here. It opened in around 1974 and closed in 1985, when it moved to two new buildings: one here and one on the westbound side. One of these was celebrated as being their 250th branch. The plan had been to build it with a lodge to the east of the filling station, but instead a restaurant was built on land to the west of the filling station. The original building was demolished shortly after, becoming two bungalows.

The site soon became known as Acre Hill service station, named after the house directly behind it. Meanwhile, two different developers also applied to build new service areas on the A40 in 1990: one north-west of the Lower Road roundabout and one west of Cuckoo Lane.

The Little Chef gained a Burger King, but it closed in around 2005 and became a restaurant and then a car dealership. It then became a café again, relaunching as Kingsley Café in late 2022.

The eastbound filling station went on to become an Esso filling station gaining a Tesco Express store in 2002. Tesco refer to it as their Eynsham branch. It received a major refurbishment from Esso in 2016.
