Service areas which were built with the motorway normally had a footbridge included. Many chose to incorporate it into the building, but some didn't, and those that didn't are listed here.
We list a footbridge as "external" if any part of it is uncovered. This means services in this category can be used to meet with people or visit facilities on either side, but not to turn a vehicle around, and in poor weather it may not be a pleasant walk.
There are no A-road or Irish examples. Barnsdale Bar and Easington services on the A1 and A19 used to have footbridges, but they have been removed.

- Rownhams (M27 between J3 and J4)
- Sandbach (M6 between J16 and J17)
- Southwaite (M6 between J41 and J42)
- Taunton Deane (M5 between J25 and J26)
- Toddington (M1 between J11A and J12)
- Watford Gap (M1 between J16 and J17)
