Trivia and History

Two-storey hotel building, pictured from across the road.
The Supreme Inn hotel.

The roundabout at Bicker Bar was built in the 1980s. Lawlor Land began planning the service area in 1992.

The hotel opened as Friendly Hotels in around 1993. It became the Comfort Inn, and in 2010 it became Supreme Inns. It's known as the Bicker Bar Hotel, and it's clear from its appearance that it had slightly bigger ambitions than a typical roadside lodge: it has a small, landscaped garden and the word "hotel" painted on the roof.

Between 2003 and 2006, a large truckstop was proposed on the field opposite this service area, but ultimately it wasn't built.

The forecourt opened as a Pace filling station operated by Malthurst. In around 2008, the filling station was rebranded to Texaco and a Star Market store was added. MRH rebranded the site to Esso in 2011.

MRH added their own-brand Hursts store to the site. It was then passed to MFG following the merger of MRH and MFG.

MFG redeveloped the forecourt in Spring 2021. The new site reopened on 22 July 2021 with a much larger Londis store that had swapped places with the pumps, alongside new HGV pumps, an AdBlue bunker and two jet wash bays. The new sales building included a Greggs store alongside several 'food to go' options. The site also later to gained four 'MFG EV Power' electric vehicle charging bays in August 2024.

The hotel was selected for use by the Home Office in 2021 and remained closed to the public until April 2024.
