Trivia and History
This well-known 1970s roundabout first attracted interest from Little ChefHistory and Travelodge, with the pair opening on Tenby Road in 1987. They never constituted an official service area and were only used by those who knew they were there. The Little Chef closed in 2017, and became a Starbucks.
Elsewhere, a field and derelict house opposite those two began to be sold for development. Draycott Investments and Developments planned a McDonald's and Costa along a spine road with space for further development, including a third plot of land that was believed to be reserved for a pub/restaurant. Despite a considerable number of objections, the planning inspectorate ruled that it would be useful for the strategic road network.
The McDonald's opened in late 2022, and the Costa opened as a drive-thru Greggs. The third section of land was developed by MFG, opening as an Esso forecourt with a Budgens store and Pret A Manger concession in October 2023. Whilst the facilities didn't gain official service area status due to the existing local services signs for facilities in the bypassed town, this is certainly one of the largest A-Road offers in Carmarthenshire.
The new forecourt won 'Forecourt Trader of the Year' at the 2024 Forecourt Trader Awards. Customers were quoted in the press saying "the toilets are brilliant".
