As part of those works, a new roundabout would be created to allow traffic to access Upper Heyford and the waste management centre, close to the M1 at junction 16. Despite Oval not being an M1 motorway service area and not qualifying to be one, the M1's variable message signs were used to warn of disruption at its forecourt during the 2021 fuel crisis. As Oval's name wasn't in the system, it was only called "J16 Services".
