When the Maresfield Bypass was planned in the early 1980s, provision was made for a service area here at the new Black Down roundabout. The finished road opened in 1989 and had an embankment provided for the slip roads. Norfolk House intended to open a Kelly's Kitchen restaurant here in late 1990, in partnership with Fina who would provide the filling station, but this didn't happen.

The service area was later built by Forte in 1998 with a Little Chef (Kelly's Kitchen's successor) restaurant and Total (Fina's successor) forecourt.

The Little Chef was officially opened on 24 July 1998 by ex-England and Liverpool footballer Emlyn Hughes. The building was sunk down away from the main A22 and used the newest generation of Little Chef's prefabricated building design, with what they called a "traditional look" and a fast construction time. The Little Chef was quickly joined by a Burger King restaurant, which was originally planned as a drive-thru.

The Burger King closed in the mid-2000s, with the Little Chef following in 2010. There was a plan for the building to be converted to a KFC, but it re-opened two years later as a McDonald's Drive Thru instead.

The petrol station has been branded Shell since 2012. The filling station reopened on 22 February 2019 after a major refurbishment, which saw the shop branded Little Waitrose & Partners. A Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging bay was added to the back of the forecourt in 2021, but it has since been switched off due to power supply issues.
