Trivia and History
The original part of the service area was developed by Kelly's Kitchen and Petrofina, opening in October 1988 at a cost of £1.5 million, at what is known locally as the Pullover Roundabout.
Kelly's Kitchen became the West Lynn branch of Little ChefHistory almost immediately. In February 2012, it was deemed to be under-performing and closed. In 2013, the restaurant reopened as a McDonald's Drive Thru.
The Fina forecourt later became Total. In December 2012, the site was sold to Shell following Total's nationwide shutdown. These facilities became widely known as 'King's Lynn services'.
Meanwhile there was another branch of Little Chef about two miles to the east at Hardwick Retail Park. This branch, known as the King's Lynn branch, opened on 22 March 1988, probably hoping to compete with Kelly's Kitchen. It lasted until 1996 when it was closed in favour of the larger West Lynn branch, although the building was briefly brought back as a Burger King by owners Granada in the late 1990s.
Freebridge Park
A new development, known as 'Freebridge Park', was granted planning permislsion in April 2019. It utilises the land surrounding the hotel access road adjacent to the service area. These plans include six retail units, four industrial units and two drive-thru units situated directly behind the McDonald's restaurant adjacent to Clenchwarton Road. The drive thrus were named as a Costa Drive Thru and a KFC Drive Thru.
Further plans were submitted in October 2020 for the north-east corner of the development to be developed into a new Highways England depot with salt barn, as opposed to the six retail units that were proposed in the 2018 application, but this was later withdrawn.
This is not the first time that this land had been earmarked for development, as a lorry park has been planned as far back as 1992. While Freebridge Park isn't officially the service area, it is universally known as 'Freebridge services'.
The first part of the development, the Costa Drive Thru, opened in May 2021.
Plans for the north-east corner of the site were later changed again in March 2023, with the land set to become a twelve-bay Fastned EV charging hub instead following approval in October 2023.
