Trivia and History
The services were built by Welcome Break who were looking to avoid the regulations imposed on motorway sites. At the same time, it took some attention away from Granada's Donington Park services, which is in a more difficult to access position further along the A50.
The sliproads to the services were built long before the services themselves. The buildings were designed by ACP Architects, and use a single amenity building with a forecourt sales shop at one end and an restaurant area at the other.
Despite the services being quite new, they were built with one of Granada's Little Chefs, even though all the other ones at Welcome Break sites had closed years ago. The Little Chef opened with the services in 2000, and closed during Welcome Break's re-branding in 2006.
Further closures mean the westbound side now only has a WHSmith to offer, while eastbound also has what's left of the Eat In restaurant. The eastbound Eat In was eventually de-branded in 2017 and finally closed in 2018. Both sides of the site still features Welcome Break's old (pre-2006) corporate signage around the car park. Most of the interior signage has been replaced but the walls and toilet block still contain evidence of Welcome Break's old, blue styling.
Naming Issues
Derby South is often referred to as Shardlow, as just a few miles to the west (and slightly to the south of Derby South) lies Derby services. The hotel at Derby South is officially named 'Donington', which is also the name of a Moto service area. Confused? You should be!
