Trivia and History

The Willowtree garage is named after the Willowtree Cottages, which it was built next to on a piece of land primed for development when the Alnwick Bypass was built. The petrol station used to be branded BP, then Shell, then Total, then went unbranded for a while. It still retained the Total colour scheme for some time after the closure.

The forecourt was originally owned by Aln Motor Co Ltd, and then Ord's Of Amble. In the 1970s there was a plan to build a hotel here.

A second site was developed on a larger plot of land to the south of the junction. The southern forecourt used to be branded Shop 'n Drive.

In 2020, Rontec purchased the Willowtree forecourt from the Co-operative Group. The site became Rontec’s second site at the same junction and with them introducing Esso branding and a Morrisons Daily store to this forecourt.

Many sources refer to this site as "Alnwick motorway service area", despite the A1 not being a motorway.
