Trivia and History

Services opened 2016

The service area started with the Poppleton Garage, built in the 1960s on Boroughbridge Road. This later gained a Seat dealer known as Wills And Ellis Garage, and its location became a junction on the York Ring Road.

The petrol station used to be branded Shell during the 1990s, and later rebranded to Total with a Mace store in the 2000s.

Both the forecourt and car dealership closed in late 2012 following Total's nationwide shutdown and the forthcoming impact of the junction upgrade works, leaving the site derelict.

Plans to develop a new service area were put forward by Skelwith Group in 2013. The new BP filling station opened in 2016 with an M&S Simply Food store and Wild Bean Café, alongside a McDonald's Drive Thru restaurant.

Upon opening, the new service area was provided with official road signs on its various approaches, making it an official service area.

A BP Pulse electric vehicle charger was added to the filling station in Autumn 2023.
