The supermarket industry has always been kept surprisingly far apart from the service station industry, until things started to become a bit complicated in the 2010s.
For Morrisons, the majority of their appearances on the roadside are now in the form of the convenience store Morrisons Daily, which is used to brand the sales shop at some Rontec-run forecourts. Morrisons were then acquired by MFG in 2021, allowing for a new crossover opportunity at their sites.
Aside from this, there are two Morrisons supermarkets near main roads, which have been adopted as roadside service areas. At Four Pools, the signage is mainly provided for the forecourt, but the full supermarket is also available.
At Boroughbridge, a seemingly innocuous Morrisons superstore was signposted as "Services" from the main A1(M). This was due to the lack of facilities on the new motorway. Once dedicated facilities began to be provided, the motorway signs were removed, and local "Services" signs were changed to the more regular "Superstore". Boroughbridge remains the only major supermarket site to have ever been signed as a motorway service area.
Regardless of this, both those supermarket forecourts were acquired by MFG, who have changed the store branding to 'Morrisons Daily'. The full supermarket remains next door.
