This is the service area at Hazelgrove Roundabout in Somerset, not to be confused with the restaurant on Camel Hill, or with Hazel Groves elsewhere in the country.

A small petrol station and McDonald's at the end of the Sparkford Bypass. Confusingly, when travelling west the signage provides directions to both Hazelgrove and Camel Hill services without differentiating between the two. Hazelgrove is the first exit.

Trivia and History

McDonald's restaurant.
The McDonald's restaurant.

Before the Sparkford Bypass was built the A303 and A359 used to split in two, and run along what's now the northern and eastern boundary of this service area. A garage was positioned right in the middle, where the two met. It was known as Wakes Garage.

When the bypass opened in November 1989, the new roundabout was built on the western side and several options to expand Wakes Garage into a full service area were looked at by the owners and by Margram, including placing a more traditional roadside restaurant by the roundabout.

Eventually the original garage was demolished and replaced with an Esso filling station and SPAR store in 2000, operated by Chartman Retail, who called it 'Sparkford services'.

A new McDonald's Drive Thru was provided in the rear corner: McDonald's still call it their "Wakes Garage" branch. InstaVolt later installed an electric vehicle charging point in the car park in March 2023.

In 2018, the filling station was sold to MFG after an investigation conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority, who now know it as Hazelgrove services. This is named after the notorious roundabout, which is itself a modernised spelling of 'Hazlegrove', a spelling that is also still used in some instances. Following the acquisition, MFG rebranded the shop to Londis.

MFG have now opted to sell the site to Shell under a separate battle with the Competition and Markets Authority. The site closed for two weeks in late March 2023 for the site to be refurbished.
