Trivia and History

Before the Sparkford Bypass was built, the A303 and A359 used to split in two, and run along what's now the northern and eastern boundary of this service area. A garage was positioned right in the middle, where the two met. It was known as Wakes Garage.
When the bypass opened in November 1989, the new roundabout was built on the western side and several options to expand Wakes Garage into a full service area were looked at by the owners and by Margram, including placing a more traditional roadside restaurant by the roundabout.
Eventually the original garage was demolished and replaced with an Esso filling station and SPAR store in 2000, operated by Chartman Retail, who called it 'Sparkford services'.
A new McDonald's Drive Thru was provided in the rear corner. McDonald's always called it their "Wakes Garage" branch; with its small car park and seasonal flow, it could get quite chaotic around it. InstaVolt installed an electric vehicle charging point in the car park in March 2023.
The filling station was sold to MFG in 2018 after an investigation conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority. MFG know it as Hazelgrove services: this is named after the notorious roundabout, which is itself a modernised spelling of 'Hazlegrove', a spelling that is also still used in some instances. Following the acquisition, MFG rebranded the shop to Londis.
MFG opted to sell the site to Shell under a separate battle with the Competition and Markets Authority. The site closed for two weeks in late March 2023 for the site to be refurbished.
The Hazelgrove Roundabout was bypassed on 10 August 2024. While the service area is signposted from the main road, the detour has reduced the number of people using what had been an extremely busy facility. Unusually, the McDonald's closed on 23 November 2025, despite them having many other branches at A-road exits. Even so, the dramatically reduced traffic levels on the roundabout may eventually permit more development in the area. As part of the closure, the InstaVolt electric vehicle charger was also removed.
