Trivia and History

Sheila's Kitchen restaurant.
The former Sheila's Kitchen restaurant.

The Gate pub was a historic facility provided on the old Watling Street, which appeared to be named after a toll gate. This was expanded to become the Gate Inn, which survived the A2 being upgraded via a short bypass in the 1970s. It became a grade II listed building in 1979.

In 1983 the Gate Inn was taken over to become the Gate branch of Little ChefHistory, alongside modern fuel facilities. The Little Chef closed on 22 August 2012 as part of the chain's cuts, but it was purchased by the branch manager who turned it into Sheila's Kitchen. Sheila’s Kitchen opened in May 2013 with the kitchen retaining the look of an old pub whilst serving as a modern diner. Sheila’s Kitchen closed its doors for the final time on Wednesday 24 April 2019 following the owner moving on to focus on other business ventures.

The original Travelodge car park which sits on the south side of the forecourt here has been abandoned for many years. This is now set to be given a new lease of life as MFG submitted plans in April 2020 to build a Starbucks Drive Thru on this land. A decision is set to be made by the end of August 2020.

Past the restaurant is the Esso petrol station, which was re-built in 2006 with a modern forecourt and a large On the Run convenience store combined with a Costa cafe. The petrol station was then sold to MRH in 2015 with the cafe immediately removed and replaced by a bunch of Costa Coffee machines; this was followed by a re-brand of the store to the operator's own-brand Hursts a year later, followed by a Greggs outlet in 2017.
