Trivia and History
The original Little Chef, located at the other end of Fontwell village.
The service area is positioned on the Arundel Road, on a field which was left spare when the bypass was built. Most of the road signs refer to it as a "Local Services", which may have been an effort to please local businesses at the time, although there is now nothing other than this service area available in the area.
There is a second Travelodge 200 yards away from the hotel at this site, formerly an Innkeeper's Lodge.
Shell redeveloped their forecourt in September 2018, reopening in November with a new, larger sales building including Little Waitrose and deli by Shell offerings. A Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging point was also installed. The extended sales building means the site is no longer able to accommodate HGVs.
Restaurant History
Like many former Little ChefHistory sites, this one was built by Forte to take advantage of a new roundabout on a new road, alongside a forecourt and a hotel. In this case it makes up for another branch to the east of Fontwell, which lost its traffic when the bypass opened. The Esso petrol station next to that was demolished and the restaurant was planned to become either a village hall or demolished for housing, but it survives and is now S&G Motor Centre.
At the new site, separate car parks were provided for the hotel and restaurant, to take advantage of the space available. The new Little Chef gained a Coffee Stop and then a Burger King franchise. For a time, it was a Little Chef Choices site with Caffè Ritazza and Harry Ramsden's menus. While those were removed, a Coffee Tempo! was later added.
Owing to its popularity, the restaurant received the Wonderfully British refurbishment in 2011 which included the addition of a Good to Go takeaway counter.
Euro Garages became the new owners of Little Chef in 2017, who didn't seem sure what to do with such a large building. It was transferred over to their holding name EG Diner in January 2018 while plans were drawn up to replace it.
The EG Diner and Burger King restaurants closed in August 2018 and reopened in December 2018, with the Burger King being refurbished and the EG Diner being replaced by a KFC Drive Thru.
