Trivia and History
The roundabout at Bicker Bar was built in the 1980s. Lawlor Land began planning the service area in 1992.
The hotel opened as Friendly Hotels in around 1993. It became the Comfort Inn, and in 2010 Supreme Inns.
The forecourt here opened as a Pace filling station operated by Malthurst. In around 2008, the filling station was rebranded to Texaco and a Star Market store was added. In 2011, Malthurst merged with Pace to become owned by MRH and the site was rebranded to Esso. MRH went onto added their own-brand Hursts store to the site. In June 2018, the site was passed to MFG following the merger of MRH with MFG.
MFG were granted planning permission in August 2020 to redevelop the forecourt. Construction commenced on 1 March 2021 which will see a much larger Londis store swap places with the existing pumps. The redeveloped forecourt will also include new HGV pumps, an AdBlue bunker, 2 jet wash bays and 3 'MFG EV Power' 150kW electric vehicle charging bays whilst the new sales building will include a Greggs store alongside a 'food to go' area featuring Costa Express, fâwip Frozen Desserts, Rollover and Skwishee BrainFreeze. The site is set to reopen in July 2021.
Between 2003 and 2006, a large truckstop was proposed on the field opposite this service area, but ultimately it wasn't built.
