Trivia and Design

When Yorkshire was divided in 1974, the new boundary ran down the edge of the A1. This means the northbound service area is in the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, while most of the southbound service area is in the Selby district of North Yorkshire.
Barnsdale Bar was known for its large restaurant on the southbound side; it was one of the biggest service area buildings on an A-road. This fell into the hands of Little Chef and became derelict in 2019.
Plans were submitted to demolish the derelict restaurant building, building a McDonald's Drive Thru in its place with a 23.5 Degrees-operated Starbucks Drive Thru and two more units (planned to be occupied by Greggs and Subway) built within the hotel car park. The restaurant building was demolished in late 2022, with building works on the units commencing in early 2024.
The Starbucks opened on 8 April 2025, with the car park gaining twelve InstaVolt electric vehicle charging points positioned in front of the derelict hotel building in May 2025. The two other units were also built as part of this phase of works, with the McDonald's works commencing later that summer. It was later announced in early 2025 that the Greggs unit is set to become a branch of the Yorkshire-based bakery chain Cooplands Bakery instead, whilst McDonald's opened on 12 November 2025.
Meanwhile, Shell currently hold planning permission to build two Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points on the northbound side.
