Trivia and History
Downham Market Little Chef in 2007, shortly after closing.
There were the remains of a stone cross just west of here, hence the name of the Stone Cross Estate and subsequently this service area.
The service area was developed by AJ's and Mobil, with Barker Brothers Builders commencing construction in 1989. The site was operated by M Kamper Services and opened in Autumn 1989, joined by the country's 14th AJ's Family Restaurant in November 1989. There were plans to add a hotel next to the restaurant in 1991, but this didn't happen.
The restaurant later became the Downham Market branch of Little ChefHistory in 1997, which traded here until it become one of the casualties of the 2007 restaurant closures. The restaurant was acquired shortly after by two former managers of the Arbuckles American diner chain, previously known as Fatty Arbuckles, who relaunched the Arbuckles brand here on 10 March 2008.
The filling station rebranded to Q8 in 1991, Jet in the 2000s, and BP in the early 2010s. The filling station was later acquired by MRH in the mid-2010s, rebranding the site again to Esso and adding their own-branded Hursts store to the site. This later became part of MFG's network following the merger of MRH and MFG, with the store rebranding to Londis in 2022.
The Arbuckles restaurant suffered major flood damage following a large rain storm in the area on 17 June 2020, with some parts of the building under 30cm of water. The restaurant reopened on 12 October 2020.
MFG commenced redevelopment works on the existing forecourt on 9 June 2025. The site is being fully rebuilt with a new, larger shop building being added to introduce a new food to go offer to the site. The plans also include relocation of the HGV pumps to the rear of the sales building, with two dedicated fuelling lanes added, seven MFG EV Power EV charging bays and three jet wash bays. The site is set to reopen on Tuesday 16 December 2025.
