Trivia and Design
The forecourt was originally known as 'East Midland service station', but it's now known by the even vaguer title of 'Country'.
There is a pair of bus stops outside close to the service area, which receive a regular service. Despite the Little Chef having closed in 2004, NaPTAN (which is the source of most journey planning services and bus stop announcements), still calls both bus stops "Little Chef" (as of 2024), and indeed this name is still advertised at the stops themselves.
History
A garage has been positioned here next to the original path of the A605 since at least the early 1950s, which was acquired by Binns Motors in 1952. The site went onto sell Shell fuels from 1956. The road was later diverted away, allowing the old road to be used as HGV parking.
The Warmington branch of Little Chef opened in the next parcel of land on 21 January 1985 and was officially opened by local Oundle schoolgirl Victoria Bowers. There were plans to add a Travelodge, but this didn't happen. The restaurant closed in around 2004, becoming Peranakan Café and then Jem's Diner. It is now abandoned.
The forecourt was acquired by M Kamper Services in June 1985, who operated the site under Mobil branding. The site was later acquired by Q8 in late 1990, before rebranding to Jet in the 2000s. The forecourt was later acquired by MRH in the mid-2010s who rebranded the site to Esso.
MRH were acquired by MFG in 2018, who rebranded the shop to Londis in late 2020, removing evidence of the Jet-branded past from the shopfront branding.
Redevelopment
Works commenced in Summer 2023 on demolishing all of the buildings to provide a new forecourt with separate islands for HGVs and smaller vehicles along with a new sales building in the middle of the site. Original plans granted in December 2021 also included a new Starbucks Drive Thru on the site of the former restaurant, a new jet wash bay and provision for four electric vehicle charging points. New plans were submitted in August 2023 removing the drive-thru unit, with plans now including an additional HGV fuelling lane on the forecourt and a HGV parking area on the site of the former restaurant which is set to include a shower and toilet block to accompany it.
The forecourt reopened on 28 March 2024 and features a new Londis store with Greggs concession as well as various food to go offerings and new jet wash bays. The HGV parking area is set to follow in April 2024.
Planning permission is currently being sought for the four EV chargers, as well as the HGV parking area with the toilet and shower block, and a decision is expected to be made before the end of 2024.
