Trivia and History
The site is named after the nearby settlement of Windle. It has been previously known as Caldo services, Windle services and East Lancs services.
After the East Lancs Road opened in 1934, Caldo filling station was provided in the present location of the services.
In 1970, the Whitston branch of Little Chef opened here, with the filling station trading under Esso branding at the time. The restaurant traded until 1995, but reopened in 2000 as the Knowsley branch before closing again in around 2005. The building later became Nabi's, then Swaarg, and now Diya. In 2016, the restaurant was going to become an adult store, but a considerable number of objections were received from residents.
The filling station rebranded to own-brand ELSS (East Lancashire Service Station) in 2012 and then to Texaco in 2014. The shop was formerly branded as Costcutter, then Mace, and it recently gained Londis branding in late 2021.
