Trivia and History

This service area was built in the 1950s, before the M6 opened, but at the time the A49 joined here. The garage was called The Beaches. A telephone exchange is accessed behind it, and overlooks the petrol station.

After the M6 was built, the exit from the site plugged directly into the busy roundabout. The congested junction has been modified many times, and for a long time the connection to the forecourt was marked as 'exit only'. During the 2015 rebuild, this was changed to it being an entry and exit, albeit as a minor access rather than an official service station. This means the forecourt can finally claim to be serving the M6, even if you'd need to know it's there to find it.

The site previously included a car wash but this was removed in the early 2010s to add an additional HGV refuelling lane.

A Shell Recharge EV charger was added next to the sales building in 2020, but this was removed in early 2024 as construction commenced to add new Shell Recharge EV charging bays at the back of the forecourt. Plans were initially approved for two new chargers situated under their own solar canopy, but a revised application in July 2024 was granted for an additional third charger as well as the removal of the canopy. Works then halted due to issues relating to land ownership, with no timescale of when works will recommence.

The site is not connected to the Haydock branch of Little ChefHistory, which was positioned a mile to the west.
