Trivia and History

A two-storey café building.
The Eat and Sleep café and bunkhouse.

This is an important crossroads on the A1, called West Mains. The first facilities to arrive were the Plough Inn (Halfway House) and a school. Next to it the Beal garage was built, which became the full service station.

The A1 was re-aligned and widened through this area in the 1973, with the new road positioned 25 meters to the west of the original alignment. The garage was independently operated under the BP brand around this time. There were plans to demolish the garage and adjoining bungalow in the early 1990s, but this didn't happen. There were also plans to add a restaurant and 26-bed hotel to the site at the same time however this never happened.

The site was sold to Shell in 1998. By 2002, Shell had sold the site to Penny Petroleum who had rebranded the site to Texaco and added a Mace store.

By 2008, the site had been sold to The Bayford Group who ran the site under the Gulf brand. In 2010, they rebranded the store to Londis.

Plans emerged in 2014 to convert West Mains House, positioned behind the filling station, into a café and hostel. These new facilities opened in 2015, branded as Eat and Sleep Lindisfarne, with access to the site via Ocean Drive creating a unusual situation where the filling station now has a secret exit.

By 2016, Penny Petroleum had regained the site. They later rebranded it to Esso in 2018, and extended the sales building in 2019 to double the size of the sales building. The shop was later re-branded from Londis to Penny Petroleum's new 'Penny on the move' own-brand store in August 2024, with shop supplies being supplied by Costcutter.
