The site dates back to 1959 as a petrol station, when it was known as Drayton Filling Station. This is joined by newer restaurant and hotel buildings, as well as a derelict former restaurant which was converted from a house.

That house was an early branch of Wimpy, and later Little Chef. They moved to the opposite side of the site in 1986, but left behind an old sign, which became lost in the foliage and was rediscovered by accident in 2023.

The Little Chef building was converted to a Starbucks by EG Group in July 2017.

The service area also provides access to Drayton Park caravan site. As it's such an old site, pre-dating the A303 dual carriageway, it is quite constrained by modern standards and unusual in its shape.
