Trivia and History

The former Little Chef is now home to a Starbucks drive-thru.

The service area opened in late 1986, shortly after the completion of the A470 Abercynon bypass, with a Little ChefHistory restaurant operated by Trusthouse Forte and a BP filling station operated by White Dove Motor Services on land previously owned by Welsh Water. The service area was known as Expressway Service Station.

The forecourt was sold to Fuel Express in 2004, who rebranded the site to Texaco. Following the takeover, the site became known as Abercynon Service Station.

The Little Chef closed in around 2005 and became an Indian restaurant called Tamarind, before becoming a different Indian restaurant called Juboraj in 2014. This later closed in 2019.

Fuel Express submitted plans in 2006 to extend the forecourt shop, adding a café and children's play area, but these were later scaled back and the store became a Costcutter in 2008. They were acquired by Murco in 2011, who themselves were then acquired by MFG in September 2014. Following the acquisition, MFG rebranded the site back to Texaco before rebranding the store to Londis in 2017.

The former restaurant building was converted into a Starbucks Drive Thru in 2025, with a drive-thru lane being added around the existing building. The drive-thru launched at 8am on 24 October 2025 and is operated by Wales-based franchisee The Magic Bean Company, with provisions for six electric vehicle charging bays in the car park. MFG also hold planning permission to add two jet wash bays to their forecourt, as well as an extension to the sales building to house a new food to go offer.
