Trivia and History

The restaurant and hotel buildings.

Forecourt opened 1990
Restaurant opened as a Little Chef 2018
Restaurant closed 2012
Restaurant reopened 2013

Outline planning permission was granted in 1988 for a filling station, restaurant and picnic area on the planned A422 Alcester Bypass. A year later, local garage owners Bridge End Service Station planned the filling station, whilst Trusthouse Forte submitted plans to build a Little Chef. Both plans were granted permission in 1990.

The filling station opened as a Shell forecourt in 1990, shortly after the bypass. The Alcester branch of Little ChefHistory joined in early 1995, which included a Coffee Stop, along with a Travelodge hotel.

The restaurant received an extension in 1998, which saw the Coffee Stop replaced with a Burger King franchise. The site also gained the Little Chef Choices menu in 2001, where it gained Harry Ramsden's, Upper Crust and Caffè Ritazza concessions. Those were later removed.

The Little Chef was one of many to be closed by R Capital in December 2012. The building was acquired by McDonald's in 2013 who opened a drive-thru restaurant here in late 2013.

Expansion

Bridge End Ltd were granted planning permission in August 2021 to redevelop the forecourt here, replacing the forecourt canopy and pumps including removal of the current LPG pumps, adding new car and jet washes, more car parking spaces and a larger sales building which will include a Subway store. Permission has also been granted for a Costa Drive Thru store which will be situated behind the forecourt and include 6 electric vehicle charging bays.

The site closed at 10pm on 26 August 2024 for demolition works to begin. The site is set to relaunch in Spring 2025 with an own-branded shop named 'Brown's Food Stores', after the family who operate the site, along with a new food to go offers taking the same name.
